The Strathearn Community League was
founded in August 1953 when the post-war building boom created a brand new
neighbourhood almost overnight. In an effort to increase their recreational
options, residents decided to join the Edmonton
Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL). However, over fifty years later,
recreation is only a small part of the Community League movement. This is what a
Strathearn membership means today:
 | Infrastructure:
A Community Hall for monthly Community League meetings and Board-sponsored
Events and Programs; a Playground and a Park; an Outdoor Skating
Rink; and a
Wading Pool.
 | Programs:
Swimming; Community
League Wellness Program, and classes like
Babysitting, Dance, Physical Fitness or Arts & Crafts etc. offered by
other Community Leagues.
 | Recreational Sports:
Soccer; Hockey; Softball; Baseball; and other League Sports Programs
throughout the City of Edmonton.
 | Social Activities:
Community Barbecues and other Holiday Celebrations; Meetings to discuss
neighbourhood concerns like Westcorp Inc.'s redevelopment proposal for the
Holyrood area; the Safe Streets Strathearn Initiative to address traffic
issues and the proposed redevelopment of Strathearn Heights Apartments.
 | Environmental:
Neighbourhood Watch and other Crime Prevention activities.
 | Communication Network:
Community League newsletters and meetings provide a network by which the
City of Edmonton can communicate directly to its constituents. |
